📅 Day 1 – Day 63 🩺 Vet-Referenced 🐾 Breeder Tested

How to use this calendar: If you know the mating date, count forward. If you're unsure when she ovulated — and most owners are — use the first mating date as your Day 1. Gestation runs 58–68 days from breeding, with 63 days being the average. Pair this calendar with our Dog Pregnancy Calculator for a live countdown.

Stage One
01
Day 1 – 7
Fertilization
Week 1 · Day 1–7

Fertilization & the Journey Begins

Nothing visible. Everything is happening at a microscopic level.

Day 1–2

Mating & Sperm Transport

After mating, sperm begin their swim toward the fallopian tubes. Dog sperm can survive up to 7 days in the reproductive tract — which is why a single mating can still result in pregnancy even if ovulation hasn't happened yet.

💡 Note the exact date — this is your Day 1
Day 3–5

Ovulation & Fertilization

Ovulation typically happens 2–5 days after the LH surge. Once eggs are released, they stay viable for roughly 48 hours. Fertilization takes place in the oviduct.

Day 6–7

Early Cell Division

The fertilized egg begins dividing into a cluster of cells. No signs, no symptoms. Your dog will act completely normal.

Stage Two
02
Day 8 – 14
Cell Division
Week 2 · Day 8–14

Entering the Uterus

Still zero outward signs — but the embryos are busy organizing themselves.

Day 8–10

Morula → Blastocyst

The cluster of cells becomes a fluid-filled ball called a blastocyst. It enters the uterus and floats freely, "looking" for the right spot to attach.

Day 11–14

Free-Floating Stage

Embryos are not yet implanted. This is why some vets say you cannot truly "confirm" pregnancy before Day 21.

💡 Avoid stress — cortisol can affect implantation
Stage Three
03
Day 15 – 21
Implantation
Week 3 · Day 15–21

Implantation — The Real Beginning

This is when the pregnancy truly "sticks" and hormones begin shifting.

Day 15–18

Embryos Implant

The blastocysts attach to the uterine wall. The placenta starts forming and produces relaxin, which can be detected in blood tests from around Day 22–25.

Day 19–21

Early Behavioral Hints

Some dogs show slight changes: mild lethargy, less interest in food, or extra clinginess. Many dogs show nothing at all.

💡 Mild nausea is normal and self-limiting

Ultrasound at Day 25 — gestational sacs and early fetal heartbeats are visible.
Week 4 · Day 22–28

The Confirmation Window

This is when most vets can reliably confirm pregnancy.

Day 22–24

Relaxin Blood Test

A relaxin blood test can be run from around Day 22–25 with good accuracy. It's a simple blood draw and doesn't require sedation.

Day 25–28

Ultrasound & Palpation

By Day 25, ultrasound can detect gestational sacs — and often fetal heartbeats by Day 28. Palpation before Day 30 is risky and can cause embryonic resorption.

💡 Ultrasound is safe & non-invasive — go this route
Stage Five
05
Day 29 – 35
Rapid Growth
Week 5 · Day 29–35

Rapid Growth & First Visible Changes

This is when most owners start to *see* pregnancy.

Day 29–31

Skeleton Begins to Mineralize

Fetal skeletons start calcifying. Mom's appetite is picking up. Feed her a bit more, but don't double the portions yet.

Day 32–35

Belly Rounds, Nipples Darken

Her abdomen starts to visibly swell. Nipples enlarge and become pinker or darker — the classic "pinking up" stage.

Week 6 · Day 36–42

Visible Pregnancy & Puppy Movement

Belly is clearly bigger, and you might feel kicks.

Day 36–38

Skeletons Getting Dense

Fetal skeletons are now firm enough that they may start showing faintly on X-ray — but Day 45 is the reliable window.

Day 39–42

Puppy Movement & Nesting Hints

Puppies are moving. Introduce the whelping box now so she gets comfortable with it before labor.

💡 Set up whelping box early — never introduce during labor

Week 7 · Day 43–49

X-Ray Day & Whelping Prep

This is when you find out exactly how many puppies to expect.

Day 43–45

X-Ray for Puppy Count

By Day 45, fetal skulls are calcified enough for an accurate X-ray count. Knowing the number helps you and your vet know when labor is truly "done."

Day 46–49

Nesting Behavior Begins

She may dig at bedding, seek quiet corners, or rearrange blankets obsessively. Restrict rough play — no jumping, no stairs.

💡 Bump food up to ~25% above normal

Week 8 · Day 50–56

Final Preparations

Milk comes in. Temperature monitoring starts. Whelping is near.

Day 50–52

Milk Production Begins

Mammary glands become engorged. Some dogs leak colostrum. Do not squeeze the nipples to check — just observe.

Day 53–56

Temperature Checks Start

From Day 55, take her rectal temperature twice daily at the same times. Normal is 100.5–102.5°F (38.0–39.2°C). A drop below 99°F (37.2°C) usually means labor within 12–24 hours.

Final Stage
09
Day 57 – 63
Whelping
Week 9 · Day 57–63

The Whelping Window

Puppies are viable. Birth can happen any day now.

Day 57–58

Puppies Fully Formed

Puppies are fully developed. Mom's appetite often drops. She may seem restless and uncomfortable.

Day 59–60

Pre-Labor Signs

Watch for: refusing food, pacing, panting, digging, and — most importantly — the temperature drop.

Day 61–62

Active Labor Likely

Stage 1 labor (6–12 hours): restlessness, panting, nesting. Stage 2: visible contractions, water breaking, pushing. Call your vet if she pushes hard for 30 minutes with no puppy.

💡 Have vet's number + emergency clinic saved in your phone
Day 63

Textbook Due Date 🐾

Day 63 is the statistical average. Many dogs whelp on this day; many whelp 1–3 days before or after. Normal range extends to Day 68.

What If My Dog Goes Past Day 63?

It's common for dogs to whelp a few days after Day 63 — especially if the breeding date isn't precisely known. Since gestation runs 58–68 days from breeding, going to Day 65 or Day 66 is not automatically a concern.

That said, don't sit on it forever. If your dog passes Day 68–70 without showing any signs of labor — no temperature drop, no nesting, no contractions — call your vet. A prolonged gestation can indicate fetal distress, uterine inertia, or a miscalculated breeding date.

⚠️ Call Your Vet Immediately If You See:

  • Green or foul-smelling vaginal discharge (sign of placental separation)
  • Strong, continuous straining for 30+ minutes with no puppy delivered
  • More than 3 hours between puppies with no progress
  • Temperature above 103°F (39.4°C) or below 98°F (36.7°C) with no labor
  • Collapse, tremors, or seizures — possible eclampsia (calcium crisis)

Day-by-Day Pregnancy — FAQ

Common questions from owners tracking their dog's pregnancy day by day.

Day 45 is the reliable window for an X-ray puppy count. By this point, fetal skeletons have mineralized enough to show up clearly on radiographs, and your vet can tell you exactly how many puppies to expect. This is important because knowing the number helps you recognize when labor is truly complete.

Yes — Day 25 is typically the earliest point at which an ultrasound can detect gestational sacs. Fetal heartbeats are often visible by Day 28. A relaxin blood test can also be run around Day 22–25. Abdominal palpation is possible but risky before Day 30, since it can cause embryonic resorption.

Yes. While Day 63 is the average, the normal range extends from Day 58 to Day 68 from the breeding date. If your dog passes Day 68–70 with no sign of labor, contact your vet — it may indicate a medical issue or a wrong breeding date.

Use the mating date as Day 1 and count forward. If multiple matings happened, use the first one. For a live countdown, use our free Dog Pregnancy Calculator — it calculates both the current day and the estimated due date.

The first visible sign is usually nipple enlargement and darkening ("pinking up") around Day 25–30. A visibly rounded belly typically appears between Day 32 and Day 40. Puppy movement may be visible from Day 40 onward in lean dogs. Behavioral signs like increased affection or mild nausea can appear earlier, but they're inconsistent.

Introduce the whelping box around Day 45–50 so she has time to get comfortable with it. Never introduce it during labor — a new environment at that point can stress her and delay whelping. Place it in a quiet, warm, low-traffic area.
